The Telstra Business Awards are seen as the pinnacle of small business recognition in Australia, and after 25 years of the Awards program, it’s easy to see why.

Back in 1992, Don Wood – an Overseas Telecommunication Corporation (pre Telstra) executive - together with like-minded pioneers from the Australian government and media, decided to organise a program to recognise the achievements of small and medium businesses across the country. Don’s aim was simply ‘to help businesses help other businesses’, and the Awards program was born.

A rigorous entry process was established to help entrants step back from the day-to-day grind and scrutinise the strengths and weaknesses of their business, or as Don said, to ‘work on the business instead of just in the business’.

Fast forward to 2017, and the TelstraBusiness Awards are as celebrated and inspiring as ever. Businesses continue to benchmark themselves against peers, business stories are being shared across the country, and over 2000 Alumni – finalists and winners  - have been recognised.  With a range of different categories – micro business, small business, medium business, new business and charity, the Telstra Business Awards are the perfect occasion for business and charity owners to access networking opportunities, build their profile and celebrate their achievements.

Awards Alumni are highly regarded, admired and respected, and Smarter was lucky enough to hear the advice from four past winners; Cargo Crew, Brookfarm, Stone & Wood and Artlive Media.

All four Alumni share their Awards experiences, from the knowledge learnt in application process to the insights gained on the night. They also share their advice for budding Awards entrants, and if you’re not a business or charity owner just yet, chances are you’ll be feeling inspired after listening to our Alumni!

Entries for the 2017 Telstra Business Awards are now closed.
