Highlights
  1. Cyber deception allows businesses to trick and trap attackers by drawing them to face data files.
  2. Defensive strategies being used by government and defence agencies are attracting the attention of mainstream businesses.

Tackling cyber threats before they impact Australian governmental and defence agencies has been a successful formula for cyber security firm, Penten, the Telstra Australian Capital Territory Business of the Year.

With cyber security at the top of the agenda for many organisations across Australia, and around the world, the Canberra-based business is making waves with its unique solutions and tactics.

Penten focuses on two core areas of cyber security:

1.     Secure mobility: enabling government users to access classified information on mobile devices in a security setting.

2.     Cyber deception: tricking and trapping attackers with realistic decoys that camouflage your data and systems, triggering a small number of reliable indicators in the event of an intrusion.

“We focus on delivering disruptive cyber security capability to solve tomorrow's digital challenges,” Penten CEO, Matthew Wilson, said.

“Our team can identify and solve the hard problems that others haven’t been able to unlock.”

Accepting the award, Mr Wilson expressed his pride in the Penten team’s achievements in developing technologies “to protect Australia’s most classified information from its most advanced cyber adversaries”.

“The last year has been our hardest and most transformative,” he said. “We have doubled in size, but we’ve also moved from being an organisation very focused on research and development to actually implementing our technologies with our customers.

“There’s something particularly satisfying about seeing your creations actually being used and making a difference.”

While Penten’s current client-base is largely made up of Australian and international government and defence agencies, some of Australia’s largest financial institutions and resources companies are looking to adopt Penten’s cyber security techniques, to successfully defend their data against attacks.

The Telstra Business Awards judges noted the Canberra-based business’s focus on innovation.

“Penten is a highly innovative company that is producing ground-breaking solutions in an area of national importance,” they said.

“They’re creating solutions to cyber security problems that are unique to Australia, but [are] also marketable to allied nations.“

The organisation is also an active thought leader in the field and [is] supporting a number of initiatives that serve to raise the profiles of cyber security.”

Another eye-catching feature of the company’s success is its 100 per cent staff retention rate since it was founded in 2015.

The business was also named as the Telstra ACT Medium and Making Waves Award winner. Celebrating their 26th year, the Telstra Business Awards showcase the achievements and entrepreneurial spirit of Australia’s best small and medium businesses.
