A woman driving reform programs and cultural change across State Government agencies was named the 2014 Telstra South Australian Business Woman of the Year.

Erma Ranieri, commissioner for Public Sector Employment and chief executive of the Office for the Public Sector, also won the Community & Government Award.

Erma says seeing how government services changed the lives of her migrant parents and relatives made her a passionate believer in the success that the public sector can achieve if employees are engaged. After 30 years helping workplaces to optimise their productivity and employee wellbeing, she established Change@SouthAustralia, a program that encourages public servants to initiate and ‘own’ 90-day change projects that make their relationships with the community and business more productive.

“As a working mother, balancing career and family is important to me. I therefore challenge workplace norms − cultural fit, competition, 24/7 work ethic, communications and decision-making styles − that enforce conformity to practices that are detrimental to employee wellbeing" says Erma.

Kate McKenzie, Telstra chief operations officer and Telstra Business Women’s Awards ambassador said the Telstra Awards judges praised Erma’s commitment to overcoming barriers to change and instilling a culture of innovation, accountability and high performance in the public sector. “She’s developed the Change@SouthAustralia program to spark cultural change in the public sector using innovative processes such as 90-day change management toolkits and the engagement of staff across multiple agencies to champion the changes.”

Other winners include online marketing expert Dr Karen Nelson-Field, from the University of South Australia’s Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, won the Business Owner Award while Jo Schneider, owner of DVE Business Solutions, was named Young Business Women’s Award winner.

National Awards Announcement

The SA winners proceed to the national finals in Melbourne on 26 November. For finalists and winners across Australia the awards offer a share in $650,000 in cash and prizes.
