Putting the patient first was just the right medicine for a family-friendly general practice, Family Doctors Plus, to be awarded the 2017 Telstra Queensland Business of the Year.

Announced at the 25th annual Telstra Queensland Business Awards, which were held in Brisbane last night, the State winner, Family Doctors Plus, has a 99% patient satisfaction rate in recent independent surveys.

Disillusioned with the proliferation of the “five minute medicine” approach, Dr Fiona Raciti and Dr Maria Boulton created Family Doctors Plus to empower their patients.

“Our focus is on preventing disease, as well as treating it. We aim to empower people to optimise their health and take charge of their well-being,” said Dr Boulton.

With a focus on community education, the practice holds regular events, which are proving highly popular, including puberty information sessions and school-readiness seminars.

The business also took home the 2017 Telstra Queensland New Business Award.

Celebrating their 25th year, the Telstra Business Awards showcase the achievements and entrepreneurial spirit of Australia’s best small and medium businesses (SMBs) and more recently, charities as well.

Telstra Small Business Executive Director, Brendan Donohoe, said the winners of the 2017 Telstra Queensland Business Awards demonstrate what it takes to become ‘that’ business – a leader in their field, a name that is trusted and admired and an organisation that inspires others.

“The Queensland winners all have innovation at the heart of their operations and have harnessed the latest advancements in technology to drive the next phase of their business strategy,” he said.

“Using a preventative medicine model in a traditional business environment, Family Doctors Plus displays extraordinary family and client-centric values. Their focus on education across all ages and demographics, while also continually developing their own professional skills, demonstrated a strong holistic view.”

The other business winners at the 2017 Telstra Queensland Business Awards include:

Mountain Bikes Direct, an online bike retailer, won the 2017 Telstra Queensland Micro Business Award;
Agri Labour Australia, a recruitment agency tailored to Australia’s agricultural industry, took home the 2017 Telstra Queensland Small Business Award;
NIOA, Australia’s largest, privately-owned supplier of arms, ammunition and associated accessories, was the 2017 Telstra Queensland Medium Business Award winner; and
Youngcare, a charity aiming to bring change to the disability housing sector, is the winner of the 2017 Telstra Queensland Charity Award.

Nominations are open year-round.
